What it is
The Candle 40W 220V B22(BC) Incandescent Lamp is a traditional tungsten-filament lamp featuring a decorative candle-shaped envelope and standard B22 bayonet cap.
Unlike LED lamps, an incandescent globe produces light by heating a tungsten filament to a high temperature. This creates the characteristic warm approximately 2700K light associated with traditional incandescent lighting, together with excellent CRI 100 colour rendering.
A significant proportion of the lamp’s electrical energy is converted into heat rather than visible light. While this makes incandescent technology considerably less energy-efficient than LED for general lighting, the heat output can be deliberately useful in specialist applications.
This includes suitable biltong machines and biltong dryers, where incandescent globes have traditionally been used to provide gentle heat that assists the drying process and promotes airflow. They are also used in some chicken egg incubators and DIY egg-hatching setups, where the lamp acts as a controllable heat source.
For incubation applications, the lamp should always form part of a properly designed thermostatically controlled system. Lamp wattage alone should never be relied upon to maintain the correct incubation temperature.

Although inefficient when judged purely as a light source, the heat produced by a 40W incandescent lamp can be an advantage in specialist applications. This is why conventional incandescent globes remain useful in certain biltong dryers, incubators and other small controlled-heating applications even where LED lamps have largely replaced them for everyday illumination.
An LED replacement should therefore not automatically be substituted where the original installation relies on the incandescent lamp’s heat output. A 5W or 6W LED may produce comparable visible light while generating far less useful heat.
