Thermal breakers protect circuits from excess current in a similar way to a fuse, however, they often feature a switch allowing them to be reset if tripped. Common types of thermal breakers include thermal magnetic circuit breakers and thermal automotive circuit breakers.

A thermal circuit breaker is a circuit protection device that contains an alloy reed, two precious metal contacts and the interconnecting terminals. When an over current occurs, heat is generated as the current flows through the reed causing the reed to deflect and snap open.

Non-cycling. Manually resettable circuit breakers remain in the open position until a button, lever or other external reset device is manually depressed to re-engage the circuit. Type III circuit breakers are typically used in applications where a manual reset is desired for safe diagnosis of a circuit fault. In the image shown, pressing the red button will reset the breaker and close the circuit.

Limit electrical power usage to prevent stressing your circuits. (Fringe Benefit: This tip saves money on your utility bills, as well.) Try to keep heavy-consumption electrical devices, like space heaters, irons, toaster ovens, and hair dryers, on different circuits. Avoid overloading the system with multi-outlet extension cords. If at all possible, turn off appliances and electronics when not in use.
